Sponsor Licences

A sponsor licence is a permit that allows a UK-based company to hire foreign workers or students to work or study in the UK:

  • It’s required for most categories of work visas, including unpaid work
  • It applies to citizens of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland who arrived in the UK after December 31, 2020
  • It’s also required to employ EEA and Swiss citizens who came to the UK to work after January 1, 2021

Navigating Sponsor Licence Compliance & Requirements

Unlock Talent: Secure Your Sponsor Licence

A sponsor licence allows companies to access a wider talent pool and remain competitive. However, it also comes with strict compliance obligations to prevent illegal working and abuse of the sponsorship system.

Requirements for Securing a Sponsor Licence

To obtain a sponsor licence, an organisation must: Have appropriate HR systems and processes, Demonstrate robust employment practices, Understand UK immigration rules and obligations, Be financially solvent, and Have a good compliance track record.

Application Criteria and Documentation

The Home Office will assess an organisation’s application based on these criteria and may request financial statements, bank statements, or other evidence.

Sponsor Compliance

A sponsor licence owner is required to comply with Home Office rules regarding the employment of migrant workers. Sponsor Licence holders are deemed compliant when they follow the rules and regulations outlined in the Sponsor Guidance.
The Home Office is entitled to carry out a compliance visit with a zero tolerance for non-compliance.

Sponsorship is based on 2 fundamental principles:

  • Those who benefit most directly from migration (that is the employers, education providers or other bodies who are bringing migrants to the UK) must play their part in making sure the system is not abused
  • The Home Office needs to be sure those applying to come to the UK to do a job or study are eligible to do so, and a reputable employer or education provider genuinely wishes to employ or enrol them
